Cold Pressed Juice: Better for You

If you read health magazines,or watch the Food Network, then you have come across the concept of cold pressed. Usually you will see this in conjunction with Olive Oil. It is also seen when discussing Coconut Oil. The person talking about “cold pressed” olive or coconut oil will normally stress its health benefits.

The reason people want to use cold pressed olive oil is because it has more of the natural health benefits. When you get olive oil or coconut that has been heat treated you are getting something that has has most of the vitamins and anti-oxidants already destroyed. Heat damages the molecular structure. There is also the taste factor. There are plenty of cheffs who are more concerned with taste. They use Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive OIl because it has a more robust and complex flavor than the cheaper oils. Likewise, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil has a much richer taste and smell.

The same principal appliers when you are talking about juice. It is especially true when talking about juicing leafy greens. You can get a manual juicer for citrus, but it is difficult to manually juice leafy greens. There are some models which I discuss on the site including the Z-Star, but most people will want to use an auger style juicer. This is the best juicer for leafy greens.

You don’t want to use a high RPM blade juicer. These get hot. The blades create heat and this can destroy some of the nutrients in the juice. If you are juicing something like Kale or Spinach, then you are really going to be doing damage to the juice. The more the machine has to work to tear apart the leaves, the more heat. This damage destroys the living enzymes in the juice.

You want to use either a manual juicer or a auger juicer. The auger uses a big screw that very slowly presses the liquid from the vegetables. You can use this with all frutis and vegetabels. It is the only one I would ever use with leafy greens, and it also is superior for fruits and regular vegetables. The biggest difference I see in my juices is that they are cold, and they have more flavor.

If you are making juices strictly for the flavor and taste, I think you’ll appreciate a cold pressed juice because it has less foam and a cleaner taste. When I was drinking juices made from my older juicer they were more frothy and has air bubbles. When I put in something fragile like berries the juice that I got was really poor quality. The blades tore apart the flesh of the berries and most of the material was sent into the pulp container. I ended up not even juicing berries because I simply couldn’t get the juice out. The slow turning of the auger presses out all the juice. You can add blueberries to a drink.

if your main goal is health, then you really need to start drinking cold pressed juices. It’s like the difference between regular olive oil and cold pressed olive oil. The advantage you have when making a juice is that you are going to make it yourself, so it will not cost more to make a cold pressed juice as long as you have the correct machine.
