Fat Sick and Nearly Dead Juicer

This was one of the most popular documentaries to have come out in recent years and everyone who watches it has the same question: what’s the name of the Fat Sick and Nearly Dead Juicer?

People want to know what juicer it was that helped Joe Cross and the truck driver Phil Staples lose the weight and get healthier.

Well, to answer that question: Breville. The juicer used in the documentary was a Breville. They are one of the most popular makers of juicers in the world.

The specific model that is used in the documentary is a centrifugal juicer. That’s not really the best juicer for a few reasons. I recommend everyone who is planning on incorporating fresh juice into your diet you should get an auger juicer. Auger juicer are better because they are cold press and they extract more juice.

These are subtle points that were not addressed in the movie. They are important, but not really relevant to that documentary because you were dealing with two men who had terrible diets and juice…any fresh juice….was an improvement.

Breville now makes an auger juicer. That’s what I recommend you get. Here’s why:

  •  An auger juicer slowly squeezes the juice from fruits and vegetables. This is opposed to a centrifugal juicer that has tiny little blades that slice up the fruits and veggies. This means: more juice and more importantly the juice is not damaged. The auger is slow. This doesn’t destroy the enzymes in the juice.
  •  A second reason is that the auger juicers are quiet. I don’t like the loud sound that you get from centrifugal juicers.

When they were making the documentary Fat Sick and Nearly Dead, the key point of the process was to document a long juice fast. The Breville was used and for that purpose it worked well. One other important thing to remember was that Joe tended to make what they called “Mean Green” juices. These had leafy greens in them, but they also has apples and cucumbers. Most people who make green drinks, drinks that are heavy in leafy greens like spinach or kale, choose an auger juicer. That’s because centrifugal juicers, like the Fat Sick and Nearly Dead Juicer, don’t handle leafy greens well at all.

Another important aspect of the movie was the preparation time. The film, or at least the first half, showed how he drove around and was making juice without prep space. For this reason a centrifugal juicer had one main advantage over auger juicers: less prep time.

One main advantage that common centrifugal juicers such as the type Breville makes is that there is a lot less prep involved. You don’t have to cut your fruits and veggies up into smaller pieces. With most common auger juicers you can’t stuff large slices of apples and other fruits into the feed chute. So people who don’t want to do much prep work used to prefer to buy the centrifugal juicers.

What I would suggest is that you get an auger juicer that has the large feed tube. They are new and improved. It used to be the case that you had to chop up your produce into manageable sized pieces and then put it into the feed chute. But they now have large vertical auger juicers that don’t require the same prep work. They work similar to the centrifugal juicers, you don’t have to make small pieces.

Breville makes one called a Fountain Crush. It’s an excellent juicer. I recommend it to anyone who wants a juicer but doesn’t want to deal with prep work.

The added benefit to getting a auger juicer is that they are faster to clear. Who wouldn’t want an easy to clean juicer?

The Breville SlowCrush

Here’s why I like this particular juicer:

It’s vertical. That’s always a plus. It saves space. A lot of auger cold press juicers are vertical. This new design is an improvement.

It’s quiet. That’s a big one. As someone who used to jucie for a long time with an old fashioned centrifugal juicer I can’t begin to tell you how annoying the sound of it was. Those types of juicers are really loud. This Breville is quiet.

Great for Greens: If you want to make leafy green juices like Joe Cross did (he used Kale) then you need to get an auger juicer. They are much better at extracting the juice from the greens.

Easy Cleaning: I don’t like wasting time scrubbing and cleaning. That’s why an auger is a much better design than the blade disc. You can simply wash the auger (it looks like a big screw) off under running water. You don’t need to get little bits of fruit and veggies out from underneath the blades.
