What is an Auger Juicer?

One of the most common questions people who are new to juicing have is: What is an Auger juicer? It’s a good question and it is very important if you are considering making green vegetable juicers.

An Auger Juicer is also called a masticating juicer. It squeezes the vegetables and fruits using a single auger. An auger looks like a very big drill bit or a screw. Juicers that use an auger are considered superior to the alternative method that uses spinning cutting blades. These are called centrifugal juicers.

In an auger juicer, the vegetables and fruit are pressed and squeezed. In a centrifugal juicer the fruit and vegetables are torn apart into very tiny pieces. The difference between squeezing juice out of fruits and vegetables, and shredding and tearing apart the veggies and fruit to extract the juice is a major issue. It effects both the quantity of juice that is extracted, as well as the quality of the juice.

Why choose an Auger Juicer?

I chose an Auger juicer because I wanted to make green juices. These would include Kale and Spinach. I searched for information about the best juicer for leafy greens and found out some very surprising information.

You Get More Juice

Leafy Greens are very difficult to juice. This is because they are tough and very rich in fiber. When they are shredded by a traditional centrifugal juicer, much of the juice remains in the tiny parts that are tossed into the pulp bin. This means wasted money and wasted vegetables. You’re going to end up tossing out kale, spinach or wheatgrass that still has much of the juice trapped inside.

An auger juicer slowly presses them and you will get much more juice. This means you won’t end up wasting produce nor money.

Slow and Steady Makes The Best Juice

This is a concept that many people are aware of from Olive Oil. Essentially it’s the same thing. An Auger Juicer uses a slow churning press to squeeze the juice out of the vegetables and fruits. It does this without creating heat.

This is important because heat destroys the powerful enzymes in your juice. You want the benefit that comes from fresh vegetables juice, and if you use a spinning centrifugal juice a lot of those nutrient will be lost. The fresh enzymes in green juices and fruit juices are incredibly beneficial to the body.

Auger Juicers Are The Easiest To Clean

The other thing about auger juicers is that they are very easy to clean. Unlike juicers that use lots of small blades to teat apart produce, the augers squeeze the fruits and vegetables. You won’t have to deal with removing pulp and tiny bits of fruit and vegetable fibers from blades. The auger doesn’t hold on to this material. You can simply wash it off under water. If you’re planning on making juices as a regular part of your diet, then you really need to get an easy to clean juicer. Otherwise you will constantly be putting off juicing because you don’t want to be bothered with the clean up.

Auger Juicers Are More Quiet Than Regular Juicers

If you have ever owned an old style spinning blade juicer, then you know how loud they are. Now, when that was all that was available, you had to deal with it. They were a lot better than blenders  and mesh screens—which is what people used before commercial juicers became available to consumers.

But now you can get a super quiet juicer. The auger juicer produces a low hum compared to the high screaming rattle that you find with regular juicers.

What Companies make Auger Juicers?

There are a few companies that make Auger juicers: Omega , Tribest, Hurom, and GreenStar are some of the best brands.

I own an Omega and use it several times a week. Sometimes I might use it twice a day. It is a really great machine. The auger is heavy duty and you won’t have to worry about it breaking.

This model is super easy to use and also really quick to clean. The auger simply washes off under running water. It disasembles easily so that you can store it in your cabinet, under your table, or you can re-assemble it and simply leave it on your kitchen table ready to juice again. The entire cleaning process takes less than a minute.
