Triturating Juicers: What Exactly Are They?

If you have been looking for juicers that handle leafy greens and wheat grass, and don’t destroy the enzymes in your juice, then you have probably come across the phrase “Triturating Juicers”. So, just what exactly are these juicers?

First, lets get some confusing lingo out of the way.

Triturating means: grinding to a fine powder, or grind. So, you could say that any auger style juicer is a triturating juicer. Except in the juicing world, a Triturating juicer refers to a twin gear auger juicer.

A masticating juicer squeezes. This is a cold process. You always want something that is “cold process”, because it does not destroy the nutrients. This is why you see “cold process” olive oil, coconut oil, and other oils. Well, it’s the same with juice. Heat destroys vitamins, anti-oxidants and enzymes.

Triturating Juicers: Twin Gear Design

The reason to use twin gears, or two augers, is that it requires less heat and energy to press out more juice. This is the ideal situation.

Also importantly, less stress is put on the motor. If you use a single auger masticating juicer such as the Omega, you have to go slow.  I love the Omega juicer, but I also understand that it requires me to chop up certain things like carrots and apples into small pieces. That’s because the chute is small as well as the gear needs time to squeeze the veggies up.

When you get an Omega masticating juice it comes with a plunger. You don’t want to push down too hard when juicing. If you put too much stuff in the juicer then you can stress the motor. It will crush the carrots, apples and celery, but it is better to not force it.

The Green Star Triturating Juicers utilize a twin gear technology. They are stainless steel and have the ability to crush and squeeze the vegetables

Green Star was the first company two use a twin gear design. They have inspired lots of imitators. But I still think that they make the best.

In fact, if you are going to be juicing every single day, and don’t mind the extra set up, a Green Star Triturating Juicers is the best juicer for leafy greens you can get. Personally, I like the speed of assembly and disassembly that you get from the Omega.

The big advantage to the Green Star Triturating Juicer is that you don’t have to do a lot of cutting and prep. When you use a regular masticating, single gear auger juicer, you are going to have to do some prep work. For instance, you can’t put a stalk of celery right into an Omega juicer. You have to chop it up. With a Triturating Juicer, you can simply put the whole stalk of celery right into the chute.

If you get a Triturating Juicer you should consider a few things:

Benefits of Triturating Juicers

  • You don’t have to pre cut all of your vegetables and fruit. This saves you a lot of time. If you hate doing kitchen prep, then I highly recommend getting the Green Star.
  •  Twin Gears means less stress on the motor.
  • More nutrient extraction. Advocates of the twin gear method believe that you will get more nutrients if you use a dual gear, or twin gear design.
  • The Green Star has teeth edged onto the read part of gears.
  • The Front Of the Gears are similar in design to the Omega

Con’s of Triturating Juicers

  • They cost more than regular single auger masticating juicers.
  • They require more time to set up and also more time to clean up.
  • They are a bit larger.

Some advocates believe that the twin gears produce slightly more nutrients than single gear designs. I’m personally not in that camp. I don’t think the juice is much better. It is essentially a masticating juicer, only it uses two augers instead of one.

The main benefit, as I see it, is that you don’t have to chop of your veggies. So, think about that.

Here is a sample juice you might want to make every single day. 1 Apple, 4 Stalks of Celery, A handful of Parsley, 1 Carrot, and some kale.

If you use an Omega juicer, you will have to chop up the celery and carrots into small pieces. Even large leaves of kale will need to be cut up for the single auger machines.

The downside of the Triturating Juicer is the cleanup. Because it has more parts, it will require more time to clean up.

It comes down to these factors.

Do you mind chopping up vegetables and fruits? Do you want a quick clean up? If you don’t mind cutting up the cellar, carrots, and apples into smaller pieces, and want a super fast clean up (like 20 seconds) then I would get a single auger juicer. Preferable an Omega.

If, on the other hand, you don’t want to cut up your veggies. If you want to be able to stick a whole stalk into the machine, I would get a Triturating Juicer.
