How to use a Lemon Juicer

Lemon’s are one of the best things to add to your juice. They are super healthy, and they are also taste great.

When you add lemon juice to something it immediately freshens up the flavor.

The big decision though is to figure out which type of lemon juice to get and then figure out how to use that particular lemon juicer.

What we’re going to do here is review the different types of lemon juicers and how to use each one of them.

Decide on which Lemon Juicer you’re going to Use?

The first thing you will want to do is decide on a good juicer. You don’t want to get one that is not designed to work with your lemon juicing needs.

If you’re going to be using lemon juice primarily for cooking, then a hand press or a wooden lemon juicer is going to be a good fit.

If you are going to want to make lemonade or a health version of lemonade, then you should get an electric juicer or a hand press or lemon squeezer.

And finally, if you’re looking to mix lemon juice into green juices, then you are going to want to use an auger press masticating juicer.

Hand Held Lemon Juicer vs Masticating Press ?

Most of the time when someone says they want to juice lemons, a handheld press juicer is going to be just fine.  That is because most people tend to make lemonade or cook with lemon juice. There’s not that many people out there who are going to juice whole lemons (even though I am a big fan of this).

If all you want to do is to juice a whole lemon to make lemonade but don’t want to juice the lemon skin then you can use a hand held lemon juicer. However, if you do want to juice the lemon peel, then it is important that you get a masticating juicer. These are helpful for pressing all of the juice out of the lemon peel.

I personally prefer to use a masticating juicer when I am pressing a lemon because it extracts the lemon oil. That’s healthy as well as incredibly rich in flavor.

Masticating juicers are more expensive then regular hand press juicers, but they are also capable of doing so much more than a regular hand juicer. With them you can use the juicer to make leafy green juices and cut the flavor by adding lemon skin.

What To Use a Lemon Juicer For?

There are endless ways to use a lemon juicer. Let’s see what you can do with one:

With a handheld lemon juicer you can squeeze fresh lemon juicer over salads, when cooking pasta or risotta, or you can use it to squeeze fresh lemon into your water.

Of course another way to use a hand held lemon juicer is to use it to make fresh lemonade. That’s the classic way. Take the lemon and then slice it in half and then squeeze the juice and use this with water and sugar to make lemonade.

Another way to use a lemon juicer is to add the lemon juice to a smoothie. Some people don’t want to blend up a lemon in their smoothie because it will make it way to bitter, but if you do want that hint of lemon juice, a hand held lemon juicer press is the way to go.

Finally, if you are using a masticating lemon juicer, then you can actually juice the entire lemon, peel and all. This is quite good as many of the health benefits come from lemon oil. And if you only use a hand press lemon juicer, you’re not going to get any of that lemon oil. You are only going to get the juice from the inside of the fruit.

How to use a Manual Lemon Juicer

Using a manual lemon juicer is super simple. All it requires is a knife and the manual juicer.

What you have to do is to simply take a clean knife and cut the lemon in half. Then, place each half of the lemon into the manual juicer.

Depending on the design of your hand press lemon juicer, you’re going to be able to either fold the handle over and then squeeze it closed–and in effect press out all of the juicer.

It’s that simple. When you squeeze the lemon press closed, what happens is that the force of the press crushes the lemon inside of the press holder.

Some presses have a form of auger in the holder of the juice press. That way, when you close the device, you’re actually pushing the lemon top right into a auger.

Another type of hand press lemon juicer simply uses the sheer force of of the basket, as you will see in this Zulay model below:

The Best Lemon Juicer For Squeezing Lemons

How to use a Hand Held Lemon Juicer?

It’s pretty simple. You open the hand held juicer and place the lemon half into it.

If the lemon is too large to completely fit into the hand press, then what you can do it cut it in half.

However, what I would suggest is to make sure that you get a large hand held lemon juicer so that you can avoid this problem.

You don’t want to get into the habit of having to cut each of the lemons into half’s. So, try and get a good hand held lemon juicer that has a large basket.

If you do own a good hand held lemon squeezer, and it’s still a bit too small, then just buy small lemons instead of trying to cut the lemons in half and then in quarters.

How to use a Lemon Squeezer?

A lemon squeezer is different than a hand held juicer only in name. But some people do use the term to refer to a citrus press that squeezes instead of using an auger design.

Basically, the design of a lemon squeezer is similar to a press. Just most of them do not have an auger. The lemon presses that have an auger, crush the lemon juice out of the lemon. These lemon juicers squeeze the juice out of it.

They are very similar in design, basically they use force to press the liquids out of the lemon fruit (not the peel).

How to Use An Electric Lemon Juicer

There are two general types of electric lemon juicers. The first are the large, pricey auger juicers that I use. These are best if you want to juice the lemon peel.

You can’t juice lemon peel with a regular press style juicer, eclectic or manual.

But when we’re talking about an electric lemon juicer, most people are thinking of this type of model:

Best Electric Lemon Juicer

I like this model because it’s a Cuisinart. That’s a better brand than most other lemon electric presses that you will see. And the other upside of a good model is that you’ll be able to make lemonade, orange juice, and other citrus juices.
