Why Masticating Juicers are Better: The Real Scoop

If you’ve been reading my blog posts, then you’ll see that I recommend cold press juicers over other types of juicers. And the reason is that masticating juicers are simply better than other juicers.

The reason why masticating juicers are better then regular juicers involves a bit of tech. So, let’s take some time to review how these juicers actually work. We’ll talk about the different parts of each juicer, and how masticating juicers actually work to extract juice from fruits and vegetables.

It will be a quick read and if you are curious as to why a masticating juicer is a superior machine, then this will answer any questions you have.

Masticating Juicers Are Better Than Centrifugal Juicers

That is a statement, but also the opinion of anyone who is involved in juicing. Now, you can make good juice with a centrifugal juicer, but they have some major drawbacks.

The main one is that the masticating juicer produces cold pressed juice. You are not going to get cold pressed juice from a centrifugal juicer. And if you are juicing, you want to get as much juice as possible. That’s the reason why jucing is better than blending for these matters.

The name centrifugal juicer is a bit of a mouthful. Right? So it’s not strange that you rarely see it listed as such. Instead, what you see listed are juicers. The sellers don’t mention how they extract the juice.

And that should be a warning sign.

If you don’t see a juicer listed as a cold press juicer or a masticating juicer, then you know you should avoid it.

Basically, a masticating juicer is going to be quieter and produce better juice. They produce less heat, they extract more juicer, and they are quitter.

Also, they are much easier to clean. In fact, when I wrote a long post which covers how to use a juicer, this was a main point I stressed.

Is a Cold Press or a Masticating Juicer Better?

This is a bit of a trick question. Because a cold press juicer is a masticating juicer. They are two names for the same type of juicer.

A cold press juicer is going to be a masticating juicer. Just like a masticating juicer is going to make cold pressed juice.

So, if you see a juicer with the name cold pressed juicer listed on it, then you know that you’re buying a masticating juicer. They are the same juicer.

I’ve covered which type of juicer to buy in a long article if you are intersted. I give some good pointers for people new to juicing.

So, What’s The Difference Between a Masticating Juicer and a Regular Juicer?

There is quite a big difference, and it comes down to how to juice is made.

A masticating juicer is going to press the juice using an auger. It does this using extreme pressure, slow pressure.

This is why you often see these items sold as “slow press” juicers. The truth is that they are slowly pressing the juice out of the fruit and that does not create any heat.

Heat damages the flavor of the juice as well as the nutrients  of the juice.

For this reason, most people who are interested in making healthy juice always will opt to use a masticating model. The masticating juicers press the juice out of the fruit.

Masticating juicers are slow- hence the term slow press. They don’t have to run super fast. This is why they don’t create heat.

Here’s a basic overview of how the masticating juicer will juice a drink versus how a regular juicer will juice. It’s a good way to see the benefits of using a masticating juicer over a regular juicer:

Making a Green Juice Using a Masticating Juicer

In order to explain why a masticating juicer is a better pick for making cold pressed juices, let’s see an example.

A typical green juice might be:

-3 stalks of celery

– a handful of greens (spinach or kale)

– a half a lemon or half an apple

That’s a good basis for making a green juice. And the masticating juicer is going to produce a big glass, probably enough for two people to share.

The lemon skin can be squeezed in the masticating juicer so that you get all of the essential oils out of it. Also, the amount of fruits and vegetables that you need to use is minimal. The masticating juicer will extract a lot of juice.

And it’s quiet and easy to clean up when you’re done.

Now, let’s contrast that with making a green juice in regular juicer?

Making a Green Juice in a Regular Juicer

For starters, make sure that you’re going to have more fruits and vegetables on hand. A regular juicer won’t make as much juice as a masticating juicer, so it’s a good idea to have more on hand.

So, a similar sized juice would need:

  • -5 Stalks of Celery
  • – 1 – 2 Handfuls of Greens
  • -1 Whole Lemon (regular juicers are bad at juicing lemons)

And get ready for the noise! A regular juicer is a super loud machine that makes a lot of noise.

In fact, one of the main reasons why people prefer to get a masticating juicer has nothing to do with it’s superior ability to make juice. It’s more that people prefer how quiet these juicers are when you compare them.

Choosing a Masticating Juicer: Options and Price Points

The difference between buying a regular juicer and a masticating juicer used to have a large price difference. However, that’s not the case anymore. Nowadays there is less of a gap betwen the masticating juicers and the regular juicers.

In the past, when someone was confronted about buying a masticating juicer and wanted to know what warrented the extra spend, you would have to tell them all about how masticating juicers are better at making quality juice, quiter, and cost less to use.

However, now there is not much of a price difference unless you’re buying a top of the line Omega Vertical of Greenstar.

Brands likee Omega have come out with amazing entry level masticating juicer models that you can get for the same price as a regular juicer.

For example, here’s a great Omega model you can check out on Amazon.
